Process vs Outcome based goals

The fitness industry is replete with the concept of SMART goal setting -

specific, measurable, attainable (hopefully), relevant, and time-bound.

The most common goal that people are setting? Losing weight and inches

This is an "OUTCOME" based goal. Nothing wrong with it, but outcomes are seldom controlled.

Processes, on the other hand, are what you CAN control

Consistently accomplishing the below

  • Making better food choices

  • Planning meals ahead of time

  • Training for a certain number of days during the week

  • Keeping activity levels up

  • Sleeping well

  • Managing stress

and adjusting and refining your actions and behaviour weekly, will move you towards the outcomes that you desire.

Individuals who prioritise process-based goals are more inclined to adhere to their exercise and nutrition protocols in the long run. This also tends to lower stress and anxiety, both of which have a detrimental effect on fat loss.

The next time you're thinking about setting a big goal, ask yourself: "What small things can I do consistently every day to make it happen?"
